While not all parents are crazy about "cute themes" for children's rooms, the kids themselves seem to love them. There are a number of reasons why some parents and caregivers may find it difficult to re-do the room as the child gets older. It may be that they feel the child will grow out of it quickly and possibly are not able to afford to redecorate. Or, if the theme is too specific, they may feel it will be difficult to incorporate new items suitable for an older child.
However, there are a few things that you may want to consider before you decide against giving your child's room a theme. A themed room is not only fun for a child; it can also help them express their uniqueness and personality. There are some decors that are easier than others to "upgrade." For instance, if your little sailor wants his own special marina, consider building the theme around one special item and use accessories that can be used later when he is older. A great item to build around is the Toddler/Kids boat bed.
It has a bold blue stripe that can easily be matched with accessories, such as curtains, paint or carpeting. When he gets older and decides it's time to dock the bed with its cute portholes, it will be a great deal easier to redecorate around the accessories already in place.
So, go ahead, let him drop anchor and enjoy his youth for a few years. The time to become "grounded" arrives much too soon.
